Citywise
What is Citywise?
At Guide Dogs, we help young people with vision impairment to travel confidently, whether they're surrounded by paddocks or skyscrapers. Citywise is a program that we developed for young people with vision impairment from the country. Since many of them will later work or study in towns and cities, participating in Citywise is a great introduction to mobility in an urban environment.
What do the participants learn?
For most participants, this is their first visit to Sydney. We teach them about city life - they ride public transport, cross busy streets with pedestrians and peak-hour traffic, and plan journeys using information from the bus and train authorities. And it's a great chance for them to brush up on Orientation and Mobility skills.
Though this training is a lot of hard work, the city is always an exciting classroom. The participants discover all that it has to offer, with insider tips from a Guide Dog User who grew up in the country and now lives in Sydney.
How can I join the group?
Citywise is held during the spring and autumn school breaks, and is open to all senior school students with vision impairment who live in the country and outskirts of Sydney. Like all our services, the Citywise Program is free of charge, except for the cost of travel to Sydney.
