Environmental Hazards in Schools

Many schools contain common environmental hazards for children with vision impairment. Watch out for:
  • Drinking fountains without a base which stick out from the wall
  • Low awnings
  • Extinguishers which stick out from the wall
  • Public telephones which stick out from the wall
  • Doors which open into hallways
  • Benches without a base
  • Benches in low contrast
  • Overhanging branches and hedges on walkways
  • Ramps without any markings
  • Steps with poor lighting and illumination
  • Steps without a contrast strip finish
