Environmental Hazards in Schools
Many schools contain common environmental hazards for children with vision impairment. Watch out for:
- Drinking fountains without a base which stick out from the wall
- Low awnings
- Extinguishers which stick out from the wall
- Public telephones which stick out from the wall
- Doors which open into hallways
- Benches without a base
- Benches in low contrast
- Overhanging branches and hedges on walkways
- Ramps without any markings
- Steps with poor lighting and illumination
- Steps without a contrast strip finish
