How do I become a Puppy Raiser?

With such important careers ahead of them, our puppies need a good start in life. As a Puppy Raiser, you must:
  • Be home for most of the day: your puppy must not be left alone for more than three hours at a time without supervision and human company.
  • Walk your puppy each day.
  • Allow your puppy to sleep and spend time indoors.
  • Have a yard with dog-proof fencing.
  • Have access to a car to transport your puppy.
  • Be available to attend training at Puppy Pre-School days.
  • Live in the Sydney area.
One of our Puppy Raising team will check that your home meets the needs of our special dogs.

If you're chosen to become a Puppy Raiser, you'll be contacted by our Puppy Raising team from the Guide Dogs Centre. They will give you a rundown on the Puppy Raising Program, and then once a puppy becomes available, the fun can begin.

Are there any expenses involved?

We provide all the equipment needed to make your pup feel at home, including their bed, leash and food bowl. Your only expense will be dog food, which is about $10 a week.

Can I stay in contact with my puppy?

When your role as a Puppy Raiser is completed, you're invited to a Puppy Raising Intake Day so you can return your puppy to its new home at the Guide Dogs Centre. And since Puppy Raisers are justifiably proud of their charges, we will notify you when your puppy completes its assessments and training - and you're welcome to check on its progress during training by contacting the Guide Dogs Centre.
