Obstacles and Hazards

Our Guide Dogs Instructors train people to orientate themselves in the surrounding environment, so they can identify these potential hazards. Our Guide Dogs Instructors train people to orientate themselves in the surrounding environment, so they can identify these potential hazards.

The world is full of everyday obstacles and hazards - rubbish bins, overhanging tree branches, parked cars and unprotected contruction work on the footpath, unmarked and difficult stairs, tables and chairs on the footpath and advertising boards on footpath and in shopping areas.

While most people can avoid these obstacles, they can be extremely difficult to negotiate for people with vision impairment. Our instructors train people to orientate themselves in the surrounding environment, so they can identify these potential hazards. We may also teach people to use appropriate mobility aids, including a long cane, guide dog or Miniguide.

We also act as advocates for people with vision impairment. We can assist with contacting local Councils, shop owners or others about potential hazards in their environment.
