Pedestrian Refuge Islands

This is an example of a pedestrian refuge island with TGSI in the refuge area providing useful clues about where to stop when crossing the road.

A pedestrian refuge island is a small concrete or paved island in the middle of a road that allows people to cross the road in stages. However, people with vision impairment may be unable to identify where the refuge ends and the road starts if the refuge island is of the same height and surface as the road. The Roads and Traffic Authority provides specifications for the construction of refuge islands on New South Wales roads.
Tactile ground surface indicators (TGSI) provide information that enables people with vision impairment to locate the refuge island either tactually or using their residual vision. As well as assisting people to locate the refuge island, they also provide visual clues to people with low vision as the TGSI contrast with the surrounding area.
