Pets As Therapy (
PAT) is a free community service provided by Guide Dogs
NSW/
ACT designed to fulfil the companionship needs of people who may be disadvantaged because of age, illness, disability or isolation throughout New South Wales and the ACT.
How is a PAT dog trained?
All dogs undergo a temperament test before acceptance into the PAT Program. Successful dogs are then trained to basic obedience standard over four to five weeks.
What are the responsibilities of owning a PAT dog?
Ownership of a PAT dog is an ongoing responsibility. They require exercise, grooming and continual care, and their health care requires a financial commitment from the user. Users will also need to maintain the PAT dog's level of obedience. PAT dogs receive basic training, which must be reinforced throughout the dog's life.
What is the application process?
To apply for a PAT dog, a prospective client must complete and lodge an application form with Guide Dogs Centre, Glossodia.
An assessment is then conducted at the applicant's home to establish their needs and possible benefits of a PAT dog. At times, placement of a PAT dog may not be in the best interests of the applicant, or they may be able to source a dog and train it without our assistance. Other options may be presented to the applicant, including referral to other service providers.
If the assessment indicates that the applicant will benefit from owning a PAT dog, placement of a suitably trained dog will occur within the earliest possible time.
How can I apply for a PAT dog?
To lodge an application form, contact the Guide Dogs Centre on (02) 4579 7555 during office hours. Please note that there is a very long waiting list.
