Donna Purcell is preparing herself to say goodbye to a dear companion this week. Her Guide Dog named Tina, is set to retire after nine years of loyal and loving service to Purcell, a vision impaired Turramurra resident.

After years of servicing the region remotely, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT will be establishing a permanent presence in Albury-Wodonga, with the opening of their Albury office on Thursday June 5, 2008.

International Guide Dog Day will be recognised all over the world on Wednesday 30 April, allowing  people to celebrate the contribution Guide Dogs make in assisting people with blindness or vision impairment to get around safely and independently every day.

In 1950 Arnold Cook became the first Guide Dog User in Australia. To celebrate International Guide Dog Day on Wednesday 30 May, a bust of Arnold Cook will be unveiled by Guide Dogs NSW/ACT President, Andrew Pierce, at the Guide Dogs Centre in Glossodia.

Dave Heeley, has made history and proven that vision impairment is no barrier to living your dreams following completion of the Flora London Marathon on Sunday 13 April. Heeley is the first blind person to complete seven marathons, in seven countries, in seven days.

Meet Nula, a playful Labrador puppy of only 18 weeks old. Like any other Labrador pup, Nula loves going on walks, meeting new people and puppies, splashing around in the water and playing with her toys. What makes Nula special, however, is that she is aspiring to become a Guide Dog.

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT is holding it’s first Come and Try day on Wednesday, 19 March for people who live within the region and have a vision impairment. A range of activities will be on offer including tandem cycling, lawn bowls, golf croquet and orienteering.

The Caltex shut-down team in Kurnell have raised $20 000 for one special Guide Dog pup this month. The team have proudly named him Diesel, in honour of a personal safety incentive that saw 500 employees reach their goal of achieving 20 injury free days in the workplace.

The city of Albury is hosting a matchmaking this week. Several people have been introduced to their new Guide Dogs in Albury this month and are in town to complete their training together before setting out in their new partnerships. Laurie Grovenor, a councilor for the NSW Disability Council which advises the Minister for Disability and Aging, is one woman commencing a new partnership this week.

There is a new face in town representing Guide Dogs NSW/ACT although Kathryn Stephens is far from new to either Port Macquarie or the localised services provided by Guide Dogs. Kathryn lost her vision in a car accident at the age of just 24, and has been legally blind for 16 years.

Meet Quinn and Wanetta, two playful Labrador pups of only eight weeks of age. These two lovable pooches first met in the playpen at Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. It must have been puppy love at first sight, because as soon as they met, the two were inseparable!

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) and Guide Dogs NSW/ACT have agreed to establish what is believed to be the world's first ocular imaging centre to offer free diagnosis and management services to the general community in the fight against blindness.

Cornerstone Financial Group demonstrated more than their financial worth when they generously hosted a fundraising event for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT in October. The trivia night extravaganza took place at the Baulkham Hills Crowe Plaza for Cornerstone clients, staff and Guide Dogs representatives who received complimentary meals, drinks and prizes.

Year 11 student Andrew Head was more than pleased to discover he was one of the winners in this years Australian Braille Authority, Braille Competition. Andrew has been reading Braille for 12 years now and is certainly on the path to independence with his favourite school subject being drama.

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT launched a new public awareness campaign this month themed “In the right hands our canes can go anywhere”. The campaign features a cane as a mobility aid and aims to inform the Australian community of the challenges which people with vision impairments face in their mission for independence.

It was both puppies and guests alike that returned home tired and happy after a big day out at the Guide Dogs 50th Anniversary Open Day held on the 21 October 2007. The Open Day was the first time that the doors of the Guide Dogs Training Centre in Glossodia have been opened to the public, and it proved a popular affair!

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT celebrates 50 years on Monday 22 October. “People celebrate milestones in many different ways, and at Guide Dogs we have chosen to focus on the public because we are a community-based organisation” says Guide Dogs spokesperson Manisha Amin.

Guide Dogs is inviting the public to come and celebrate its 50th anniversary at an Open Day this Sunday, 21 October. The doors to the Guide Dogs training centre on Spinks Road, Glossodia are being opened to all from 10am.

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT client Shirley Lucke is one of only five Australians to compete in the International Bowls for the Disabled World Championships. The event is being held over a week from 15 – 27 October, between the Harbord and North Manly Bowling Clubs.
