School work experience
 Printer Friendly

Who can apply?

Our work experience program is offered to Year 10 students.

The program requires students to meet our instructors at different locations in Sydney throughout the week - this could involve being at a client's house at Bondi one day and our Centre at Glossodia the next. We only accept students who can travel independently to all locations listed below in the "What's involved in the program?" section.

When should I apply?

Due to the popularity of our program, students should contact Guide Dogs towards the end of Year 9. Work experience students are selected on a 'first come first serve' basis, at the beginning of each school year.

What's involved in the program?

At Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, our work involves much more than dogs. Work experience students will become familiar with all our community services.

A typical week may include:

  • A visit to Head Office at Chatswood to learn about our different departments and their role in the overall workings of Guide Dogs
  • A day or two with an Orientation and Mobility Instructor to learn about rehabilitation
  • A day or two at the Guide Dogs Centre at Glossodia to learn about Guide Dog training
  • Observation at our Low Vision Clinic at Chatswood
  • Time spent with Puppy Raising and/or Pets As Therapy staff.

All programs are dependent on our instructors and their workload. Prior to placement, we will provide a timetable outlining when and where you'll spend your time during the week.

How can I apply?

All applicants must write a formal letter stating:

  • Your reason for choosing Guide Dogs NSW/ACT for prospective work experience
  • The week(s) that your school has designated for this purpose
  • Relevant contact details of your school and home
  • That you can travel independently to all locations listed above in the 'What's involved in the program?' section.

Your can contact our Community Education Co-ordinator online or mail your letter to:
