After we first buy the puppies at the age of 8 weeks, they enter the loving homes of our puppy raisers. Then, aged 14 months, they come back to us as young dogs and begin an intensive 20 week course at our Guide Dog Centre. This is when we teach them all the complex skills they will need for their future career. And only the very best will have what it takes. Just half will make it through training.
By the time they graduate, those that make the grade will be fully prepared for every eventuality they might meet as a Guide Dog. But such throughness doesn't come cheap. From start to finish, it costs $30,000 to train just one Guide Dog to our high standards.
