Making charitable bequests in Wills
As a solicitor, I have taken instructions for many Wills, and have found that surprisingly few people opt to include a bequest to a charity. I say surprisingly because even though an individual may regularly donate to a particular charity during their lifetime, they rarely consider them when they're deciding on how to divide up their estate.
There is a perception that you need to have a large estate before you can consider including a charity in your Will, but that is not the case. Cash bequests of any amount can make the world of difference to the people seeking assistance from organisations like Guide Dogs NSW/ACT.
It is very simple to include a charitable organisation in your Will. However, it is advisable that you consult a solicitor when making your Will rather than attempt it yourself. That way you can be sure that your bequest reaches its intended recipient.
