Doug’s career goes to the dogs

Doug Ritchie, right, at work with a client. In his almost 30 years as a Guide Dog Instructor, Doug Ritchie has concluded that there is no such thing as a typical client.

"Everyone is different, and has their own challenges to overcome," says Doug, who is part of the Client Services team at Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. "That's what makes it such an interesting job."

Doug's main motivation for choosing this career was to help others achieve their potential. He has worked with literally hundreds of people who are blind or have impaired vision.

"Whether it's a mother who can stop relying as much on friends and family, or a young person able to move interstate to attend university by themselves, it's very rewarding to watch people create their own independence," says Doug.

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT receives no government funding. The important work of instructors like Doug is made possible through generous contributions from the community, including donations from individuals who remember Guide Dogs in their wills.
