Charlie's Story
Charlie has had impaired vision since birth due to a condition called congenital glaucoma. Yet for most of his life, and for reasons he now calls "silly", Charlie refused to use a mobility aid.
When Charlie started cane training with Guide Dogs NSW/ACT 13 years ago, at the age of 37, he discovered that he could get around much more safely and independently.
Since then, Charlie has conquered remarkable challenges like running in the New York marathon and climbing Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro.
Charlie is also a long-time member of the Sydney Achilles Running Club, which meets for an hour-long run in the city on Sunday mornings and caters for people who have a physical impairment.
"I feel the same way about Guide Dogs NSW/ACT as I do about my family" said Charlie. "I know the instructors are there whenever I need them."
