Victoria's Story

Victoria walking with her black Guide Dog, JeddaVictoria has been receiving orientation and mobility training from Guide Dogs NSW/ACT since 1993, when she became legally blind due to a condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa. Then 33, Victoria learned to use a cane and an electronic sensor to get around her Sydney neighbourhood and beyond.

Victoria now has a Guide Dog, Jedda, who she says gives her even more mobility. She has also trained in the use of a Global positioning System (GPS) application that "speaks" navigational instructions on her mobile phone.

Victoria describes herself as a "warrior" who does not like to depend on others; not even her husband and two sons.

This allows Victoria to pursue interests as varied as dragon boat racing, ice skating and learning foreign languages.

"Guide Dogs NSW/ACT has helped me in two very important ways - teaching me mobility and orientation, and encouraging me to stand up for my rights."
