Guide Dogs Test Drive

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT offers a lifelong commitment to people who have impaired vision. For young clients, that means continual consideration of their future needs and travel abilities.

That's why we developed Guide Dogs Test Drive. This program provides appropriate and relevant information for children who are considering a Guide Dog as a mobility aid in the future.

What do the participants learn?

A Guide Dog user must be able to travel safely and independently, establish and maintain leadership of the Guide Dog, and have good physical ability. Through this program, children can learn about the prerequisites and skills required to work with a Guide Dog successfully.

Under the close supervision of our Orientation and Mobility Instructors, participants meet a range of Guide Dogs with different temperaments. They learn to handle, walk, toilet, feed and groom a Guide Dog - which is invaluable practical experience, as well as lots of fun.

Once they have first-hand experience of the complex skills required for Guide Dog mobility, the program can also motivate children to continue with their current mobility training.

Since owning a Guide Dog will involve more people than the child alone, parents, carers and teachers are also welcome at Guide Dogs Test Drive.

How can I join this program?

For information about the next Guide Dogs Test Drive, contact your local Guide Dogs NSW/ACT office.

As with all our services, Guide Dogs Test Drive is free of charge.
