Obstacles and Hazards

Photo of a visually impaired lady walking down a set of stairsThe world is full of everyday obstacles and hazards - rubbish bins; overhanging tree branches; parked cars; unprotected construction work; unmarked and difficult stairs; and tables, chairs and advertising boards on the footpath or in shopping areas.

For people who are blind or have impaired vision, these obstacles can be extremely difficult to negotiate.

Our instructors train people to orientate themselves with their surrounding environment, so that they can identify these potential hazards. We may also teach people to use appropriate mobility aids, including a long cane, Guide Dog or electronic Miniguide.

Just as importantly, we also act as advocates for people who have impaired vision. As such, we can assist with contacting local councils, shop owners and others about potential hazards in their environment.
