Public Transport

Many people who have impaired vision use public transport on a regular basis, negotiating their way by using their remaining vision or a mobility aid such as a long cane or Guide Dog.

Our Orientation and Mobility Instructors train people to use public transport with improved safety and confidence. We develop individually tailored programs for each client, and this training continues until the client feels confident to travel independently.

We also work with clients to plan and become familiar with new orientation routes, including travel on public transport.

In addition, we hold educational sessions for people in the public-transport sector - for example, bus and taxi operators - in order to improve their interaction with customers who have impaired vision. These sessions cover topics such as how to assist people with impaired vision, and their legislated rights.

Public transport should be accessible to all members of the community without discrimination.
