About the artwork
This piece has been created in celebration of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT’s 60th anniversary and the Chinese New Year Festival. The dog is created with the influence of traditional Chinese paper cutting also known as Jian Zhi, a style of folk art associated with festivities and happiness in Chinese culture. The artwork emphasises the celebration of the holiday season through the use of Nian Hua (a form of Chinese woodblock print traditionally used in New Year celebrations) and the joyful interaction between humans and dogs. The piece showcases both the cultural significance of the dog as well as marking its appreciation by people everywhere as man’s best friend.
