Living with low vision

Steve has Retinitis Pigmentosa, a rare eye condition that can cause tunnel vision and night blindness, and often leads to total vision loss over time.

He lived in increasing isolation as his vision deteriorated, until he hit “crisis point” five years ago and reached out to Guide Dogs for professional support.

“Every day you can’t live like everyone else. You just avoid the things that you can’t do. You cut off a great portion of your life.”

Guide Dog York

When Steve received his Guide Dog York, his life was transformed by a renewed sense of confidence and total independence.

With a Guide Dog, people notice you and offer to help. People are drawn to you. They want to say hello, they smile, people are positive and happy.

It’s not just the independence and the freedom. The confidence York gives me to get out there and go wherever I want, and the companionship – I wouldn’t swap him for the world.”

How your donation helps people with low vision or blindness

Without your help we won’t be able to support people with low vision or blindness.

Guide Dogs are an important part of what we do and they are life changing companions for people with low vision or blindness like Steve. In addition to this, we offer a number of other services which your donation will help us to provide, which include:

  • Mobility training for people with low vision or blindness
  • Canes and electronic aids
  • Training and care for our Guide Dogs
  • Development of high quality low vision aids such as magnifiers and monoculars

We provide these services to people like Steve across NSW and the ACT. Your donation helps to improve the social participation of people with low vision and blindness and allows us to provide the tools and training they need to live an independent life.
