A letter to Hamish
Ms Angela Allen, one of our Public Relations Speakers, writes a heart-warming letter to her Guide Dog, Hamish, who is retiring today. In the letter Angela pays tribute to Hamish and thanks him for being a faithful guide and companion.
Today is a special day for you. Today, you will hang up your harness and retire from your duty as my Guide Dog. I want you to know how much you deserve your retirement. For eight and a half years you have been by my side, safely guiding me to wherever I needed to go with no hesitation. You are a brilliant dog and a magnificent worker, and we have had a wonderful journey together.
I wanted to thank you for all that you have done for me. When we moved here all the way from Ireland, you made sure I wasn't stressed or overwhelmed. You made that transition so easy for me, and have allowed me to continue to do the things that I love most. I can't imagine what my life would have been like without you here.
Thank you for the independence you have given me, the confidence you have brought out in me, and the companionship you have shown me. You have been a faithful guide and a true friend, and for that I will be forever grateful.
Today is a special day for you, but it is an emotional day for me. I can see that you're ready; I have had three Guide Dogs retire before you and I know the signs. I can see it in the way that you have slowed down when we're walking, and the way that you take yourself to bed early at night. I have known that this day was coming, and yet I feel taken off-guard all the same.
Of course, this is not goodbye for us. This is the start of your new life as my much loved pet dog. It's your time to be a man of leisure, and I know that you're going to love it. While you won't be my Guide Dog anymore, you'll still be my boy. I hope you know that.
Today is a special day for you, and it's a special day for me, too. Today we will meet the newest member of our family; my next Guide Dog and your new sister, Piper.
Hamish, believe me when I say that she has big paws to fill.
All my love,
