What we do

When most people think of us, they think of Guide Dogs. But a Guide Dog is just one of the ways in which we support people who are blind or vision impaired.

At Guide Dogs NSW/ACT we provide assistance to anyone with vision loss, no matter what your age or level of vision. You certainly don’t have to be totally blind, or want a Guide Dog to receive our free services. While training Guide Dogs is an important part of our work, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT also provides a variety of supports to people who are blind or vision impaired that increase independence, minimise the impact of vision loss and build confidence for further education, employment and social participation.

Our services include:

  • Training people to use canes, canines and electronic aids to improve their mobility and thus their independence and quality of life
  • Training companion dogs for children and adults who are disabled or disadvantaged owing to age, isolation or ill health
  • Advocating on behalf of the people we assist to make the community an easier place in which to live and work

Anyone losing their sight is encouraged to contact us early, to reduce the risks of falls, accidents and depression.

Whether you have low vision, cataract, glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinitis Pigmentosa, or any other eye condition, we will work with you to identify your needs and develop an individual support plan to help you meet your goals.

Our highly trained Orientation and Mobility (O&M) specialists provide free services on a one-to-one basis in a person’s home, school, workplace or local area. This means that training can be provided when and where it is needed.

We also understand that people who require our services often have busy lives which can make accessing supports difficult. At Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, we work hard to fit in with the person’s schedule - not the other way around. Supports can be delivered on weekends and after hours if it is the most suitable option for the person.

If you, or someone you know is being affected by vision loss, please request a service now by either completing this form or by calling us on 1800 484 333.
